Nollywood Movies Expected To Bring In N2 Billion In Ticket Sales This Year

2016 will forever be remembered as a major turning point for Nigerian cinema: for the first time, Nollywood movies were competing with Hollywood movies at the Nigerian box office and actually winning.

With two record breaking movies, The Wedding Party and A Trip To Jamaica, leading the charge, Nollywood movies brought in over ₦1 billion in ticket sales – about 30 percent of the total ₦3.5 billion generated from just 28 cinemas across Nigeria.

This year, the Nigerian box office is expected to generate at least ₦5 billion, with Nollywood movies set to bring in ₦2 billion in ticket sales– 40% of the amount and almost double what they brought in last year.

Speaking at the premiere of My Wife & I, the COO of FilmOne Distribution, Moses Babatope, explained why:

"Three or four years ago, that figure was about 10% of the box office and less than ₦500 million.

This is just to tell you that the quality of the films are improving and the number of the audience is improving."

The 2017 movies currently leading this charge are 10 Days In Suncity, Isoken, Okafor's Law and Alakada Reloaded. With Banana Island Ghost set to be a massive hit and The Wedding Partysequel dropping later this year, we see why Babatope is so positive.
