Wonder Woman is the Highest-Grossing Superhero Origin Film

Wonder Woman has broken yet another box office record, as Patty Jenkins’ Gal Gadot starring blockbuster is now the highest grossing superhero origin film of all time.

To the surprise of many, Wonder Woman became the biggest film at the 2017 summer box office. The fourth entry in DC’s burgeoning shared universe, expectations were relatively modest in the wake of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Man of Steel, critically dismissed films that saw their box office returns dissipate quickly after huge opening weekends. Wonder Woman bucked that trend in a major way; buoyed by rapturous reviews and a strong opening weekend, the film had amazing box office legs, surpassing its shared universe brethren, and even doing better domestically than Marvel’s massive 2017 sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

As it wraps up its theatrical run, Wonder Woman is adding one more box office honor to its already impressive resume. Per a report by Forbes, the film’s international box office has hit $821.74 million, making it the highest grossing superhero origin film ever, surpassing Sam Raimi’s 2002 Spider-Manfilm.

Considering the glut of superhero film franchises that have launched over the last decade, that’s a remarkable achievement. And while some will undoubtedly argue against that accolade based on the impact of inflation over the years, it doesn’t take anything away from Wonder Woman’s success, especially in the face of the growing public perception that DC’s films were swerving off track after Batman V Superman and Suicide Squad.

Understandably, DC is leaning on Jenkins and Wonder Womanas they plot out the future of their cinematic universe. Jenkins will return to helm a sequel, currently slated for late 2019, and Gadot’s Wonder Woman has been front and center in the marketing for this month’s hotly anticipated DC team up film, Justice League.

DC is certainly hoping Justice League continues the win streak that Wonder Woman began. The team up film had somewhat a troubled production, as director Zack Snyder chose to depart the production due to a family tragedy, and Avengers director Joss Whedon was brought in to tweak the script and direct reshoots. While the rumors about the content of those reshoots have become something of a cottage industry, it seems a safe bet that an effort may have been made to beef up Wonder Woman’s role, as 2017 saw her surpass both Henry Cavill’s Superman and Ben Affleck’s Batman for many people as the definitive face of the DC Cinematic Universe.
